"Ruby" is was one of the first successful fighters to jump weight classes. In a upset knockout victory of legendary "nonpareil" Jack Dempsey he won the world middleweight title. The mandatory weight limit of 160 grew difficult for him to make so he jumped up to heavyweight. It is there that he used his now famous "solar plexus" punch to defeat Jim Corbett and win the heavyweight title. After losing the title to James Jeffries he dropped down to the newly created light heavyweight, and won the championship by defeating George Gardner. Bob Fitzsimmons became the first boxer to have won three titles in three separate weight divisions. Fitzsimmons also proved that a certain caliber of punching power could be carried up in weight class, and with some added technique could be used effectively against bigger men.
